population of broward county, florida hits 1.84 million

A steady flow of overseas migration helped push South Florida's population up 4.4 percent between 2010 and 2013, the Census Bureau reported Thursday.

The region had an estimated 5.8 million residents in 2013, allowing it to remain the nation's eighth-largest metropolitan area. Here's the breakdown:

Broward County had 1.84 million residents, compared with 1.75 million in 2010. The biggest driver was international immigration, which accounted for 39,565 new residents. Domestic migration added 25,965 while natural population increase (the number of births minus deaths) boosted it by 20,026.

Palm Beach County grew to 1.37 million people, vs. 1.32 million in 2010. The biggest increase came from domestic migration (25,662), followed by international immigration (20,237) and natural population increase (1,517).

Miami-Dade County had 2.62 million residents, compared with 2.5 million in 2010. It actually had a net loss of 19,877 residents who moved to other parts of the United States. But that was more than replenished by 93,196 arrivals from overseas. Natural growth made up 36,778.

When calculating international migration, the Census Bureau includes U.S. citizens, members of the armed forces and foreign-born people who move between the United States, Puerto Rico and other countries.

According to the Census Bureau, the 10 largest metropolitan areas in the United States on July 1, 2013 were:

1. New York-Newark-Jersey City, N.Y.-N.J.-Pa.: 19.9 million

2. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, Calif.: 13.1 million

3. Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Ill.-Ind.-Wis.: 9.5 million

4. Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas: 6.8 million

5. Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land, Texas 6.3 million

6. Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, Pa.-N.J.-Del.-Md. 6 million

7. Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, D.C.-Va.-Md.-W.Va. 5.9 million

8. Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach-Miami Fl. 5.8 million

9. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, Ga. 5.5 million

10. Boston-Cambridge-Newton, Mass.-N.H. 4.7 million
